The town originally grew around the textile industry, but is now best known as the birthplace of Scottish writer, Hugh MacDiarmid and renowned civil engineer, architect and stonemason Thomas Telford.
The town is also the home of the Clan Armstrong trust. As a result of this, the town was visited by Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon who said “The most difficult place to be recognised is in one’s own home town, I consider this [Langholm], now, my home town.”
Langholm is famous for having what is considered one of the finest border ‘Common Ridings’ in the region every July.
Just 20 minutes from the M6 at Carlisle, you cross the border to a town where the locals’ charisma and hospitality will have you coming back time and time again.
